The event took place on Monday morning when an bomb planted beneath a vehicle detonated, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities indicated that one theory under investigation involves the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.

Officials have been dispatched to the location, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the city.

Media coverage indicate the explosion took place in a car park close to a residential building.

Series of Incidents

Since the start of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This new event follows other serious incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a Ukrainian source earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.

The conflict has witnessed covert operations moving into the heart of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death continues to be underway.
