At least 13 people perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
