RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
