Daily Reality in the Sights of China’s So-Called Guam Killer Ballistic Systems

Like most inhabitants of the island, Jacqueline Guzman is accustomed to catching wind about geopolitical risks from Beijing. Despite rising tensions in the Pacific region, a lot of Guamanians worry more about economic pressures rather than military aggression.

She notes that her primary worry is making ends meet, and she expresses trust in the American authorities to provide her security.

But that feeling of safety wavered this month when headlines surfaced of a significant show of force in Beijing, where new defense systems was revealed—including a ballistic weapon referred to as the “Guam Killer” by state press.

Moreover, the appearance of Xi Jinping together with the leaders of the Russian Federation, North Korea, Iran and additional nations indicated a concerning international bloc that various interpret as a potential danger.

“Based on reports, nearly every person in Guam and nearby areas needs to be alarmed,” comments a local resident, elderly, who resides near the headquarters of the Guam national guard.

“However we have little residents can change.”

Situated roughly a significant distance from China, the territory serves as a critical strategic hub for the American forces in the Asia-Pacific region and contains a sizable military presence. Experts note that if China seek to seize Taiwan, Guam would probably become a key battleground in any resulting war.

Consequently, exhibitions of China’s advancing military capabilities—like long-range ballistic systems, anti-drone technology and four-legged units—draw attention across the island.

“Guam is a critical military asset for the United States in the Western Pacific,” says a spokesperson for the Joint Task Force-Micronesia.

The officer adds that the region is among the most ‘important’ for national defense and that defense units are “ready to protect our US homeland here on Guam.”

With that in mind, the US is building an advanced protection system said to offer all-around protection for Guam. Based on a recently released document, the multi-billion dollar system is planned to be operational within 10 years.

“Guam must be aware of the threat, even if not excessively worried,” says a retired military official, pointing out that Chinese forces have exceeded the United States in certain areas.

“If Beijing opt for their opportunity and targets carefully… they could significantly damage American military assets,” the commentator adds.

Even so, the expert argues that the American forces remains powerful and able to counter Beijing’s advanced military technology.

Along with the weapons, the sight of Xi Jinping positioned with the representatives of North Korea and Moscow at the display raised new unease among some in the territory.

One resident says that she earlier had no fears about Beijing—until the “shared stage” of Russia’s president, North Korea’s leader and China’s president. That, she adds, suggests “stronger political ties and mutual support” among the countries.

“This can alter geopolitical dynamics and make coordinated actions more likely. It’s alarming because it may signal a military and security allegiance,” the specialist says.

Territorial leaders, however, still insist that securing the island is of critical significance to the US military.

Legislator Jesse Lujan, who leads the legislature’s federal affairs committee, notes that the local government receives defense reports from US military officials and that the protection of the territory is handled “very seriously.”

“Our role is to stay calm, informed and cooperative, trusting that the proper channels are operational to provide for our safety.”
