Doris Makes Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Rugby squad selection update

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy misses out.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions Test against Australia in July.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

Following playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected as the coach deciding not to selecting the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a international appearance.

Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for Doris if the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
