Ex- NFL Star Antonio Brown Files Not Guilty Response in Murder Attempt Charges
Former National Football League star Antonio Brown is returning to Miami to face an murder attempt accusation related to a incident that happened in May, as his lawyer entering a not guilty response on his behalf.
Jail records in Essex, New Jersey, reveal that Brown was discharged on Tuesday morning for his move to Florida. Brown, one of the most popular players in the NFL, had waived extradition to Florida from New Jersey, in which he was detained after being apprehended in Dubai.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, mentioned in an communication that he has previously filed a formal innocent response to the attempted murder accusation. Brown could be in a Miami courtroom as soon as Wednesday morning for a release proceeding, Eiglarsh said.
Based on his apprehension order, Brown is accused of seizing a handgun from a security employee after a celebrity boxing contest in May and discharging multiple shots at a man he had fought with previously. The reported victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, stated to investigators that a bullet touched his nape.
Eiglarsh asserted that Brown was only safeguarding himself from Nantambu.
“The actions he was compelled to take were purely in self-protection against the alleged person’s violent behavior. Brown was assaulted that time and behaved within his rightful entitlement to safeguard himself,” Eiglarsh stated.
Brown was not immediately apprehended because at first officers did not identify Nantambu as a victim. It only later in May that Nantambu provided a complete statement about the event to authorities and named Brown as the gunman, the report indicates.
From his social media content, Brown had been staying in the city of Dubai for multiple weeks. In a message after the incident, Brown stated he was protecting himself because he was “jumped by several persons who sought to rob my possessions and bring physical harm to me.”
A category two attempted murder charge in Florida carries a maximum 15-year incarceration sentence and up to a $10,000 penalty in the case of a guilty verdict.
Brown has dealt with multiple court challenges over the years. He previously had been accused of assault of a delivery operator, multiple domestic violence accusations, failure to pay child support and other incidents.
During a 2021 contest with the Buccaneers against the New York Jets, Brown stripped off his shirt, shoulder pads and gloves and exited the field, resulting in his release by the franchise and virtually halting his professional journey.
Brown, who completed 12 years in the league, was an All-Pro receiver who spent the majority of his tenure with the Steelers. Throughout his professional life, Brown had 928 grabs for over 12,291 yards, the twenty-eighth highest of all time. He was a 7-time all-star choice.
