A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
