Minister Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in any cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified level in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The broader security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, including transport usage to communication habits.
