Sonic Racing Takes Aim at Nintendo's Racing Title in Recent Marketing Campaign
It's 2025, and the marketing drive for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds aim to reference the classic 90s-era competition battle. An recent commercial for the blue speedster's title seemingly features pixelated clips of Mario Kart World, using it to argue that the rival title fails to maximize its open-world framework.
Critiquing the Competition
"Everyone's familiar with that kart racing game, it's great, it's unnecessary to show it to you," the promo opens. "But what if you could blast through and compete on a different plane?" The spot then continues to highlight key of the game's defining elements, like full kart modification and cross-platform multiplayer.
"Or maybe you want to explore at will on the open road?" the announcer asks, exuding doubt.
Previous Events of Callouts
Although this isn't the opening salvo that the team behind Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds have referenced Nintendo's game, it is undoubtedly the clearest they have spoken regarding the head-to-head battle. The advertisement also references a retro advertisement for the Sega Genesis that told fans about the system's "high-speed" power. Previously, Sega showcased its system's edge by showing a race car racing on a circuit. Toward the end, it juxtaposed the SNES to an aging Winnebago that had Nintendo's classic running on a tube screen strapped to the end of the RV using a cord.
Launch Information
The game arrives next week on September 25 for Switch, Sony's previous-gen system, Sony's current console, computer, Xbox One, and Series X. Though, fans securing copies ahead of time can access it sooner... except if they're on Switch. Welp.
