The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Use of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity Game
The studio behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its upcoming project, creating a wave of hype within the gaming community. However, follow-up remarks from the studio's figurehead have added clarity to the discussion, touching on the team's stance toward generative artificial intelligence.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a latest message, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is utilizing AI technology for specific supporting purposes. These involve fleshing out presentation materials, generating rough visual ideas, and creating temporary text.
Importantly, Vincke stressed that the shipping assets in the game will be crafted entirely by human writers. "We are creating every line manually," he affirmed.
We are continuously increasing our pool of storytellers and are actively assembling narrative groups.
Given that this area is being specifically mentioned — we presently have over twenty artistic staff and have job openings for more talent.
All our efforts we do is incremental and focused on having people spend greater focus on making content.
Every ML tool implemented properly is supplementary to a creative team routine, not a replacement for their talent.
Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path
The admission of using AI initially sparked unease among portions of the community. In response, Vincke offered further clarification on online platforms.
"Our team utilizes AI tools to research ideas, similar to we use Google and physical media," he stated. "In the conceptual ideation stages we use it as a simple sketch for layout which we then replace with hand-crafted artwork."
He added, "Larian brings on creatives for their creative vision, not for their willingness to execute what a algorithm proposes."
Three Pillars of Practical Application
Vincke had earlier broken down the company's focused method to machine learning, defining its use into key areas:
- Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes refining animations, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using technology to rapidly prototype basic mock-ups of mechanics to validate concepts before complete development.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how AI could in the future create new forms of gameplay, especially in simulating dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.
He clearly noted that key artistic domains — including visual art — are are absolutely not areas where the team is cutting creative input. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these exact roles.
"We are not releasing a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not planning on reducing staff to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
