The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
