The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has markedly surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are serious titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.
Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
