Three Lions Coach Explains His Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, Anthony Barry was playing for Accrington Stanley. Now, he's dedicated on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. The road from player to coach started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He recalls, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his calling.

Metoric Climb

His advancement stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a name with creative training and excellent people skills. His club career included top European clubs, and he held international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a methodical process so we can to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies include psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. He stresses the England collective and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” he explains. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and that's our focus long hours toward. It’s our job not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. We need to progress from concept to details to understanding to action.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize all the time available after our appointment. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach ought to embody the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to operate as they do in club games, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. But in the middle area in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for development is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.

He completed the course as the best in his year, with his thesis – about dead-ball situations, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those impressed and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
