February 27, 2024, 20 years following the assault, Shaun Gilder from Oulton Broad, Suffolk was given a term of an eight-year sentence in jail after being found guilty of two charges of sexual assault and a single charge of assault by penetration.

Dan was 17 when he encountered 21-year-old the perpetrator in Norwich in 2004, and their interaction developed into his initial romantic involvement.

During a weekend evening in May that year, the pair had attended a BBQ when the perpetrator got drunk and requested Dan to take him back.

Around midnight, the individual instructed Dan to pull over on a secluded street near the local hospital in Gorleston.

The assailant violated Dan and caused significant internal harm which resulted in him being hospitalized on three occasions that time period.

Traumatized, Dan was found a way to transport the assailant back before heading to his family residence.

“I lay in bed for a long time reflecting, ‘what took place? what had just gone on?’,” he explained.

During the subsequent September, Dan contacted the authorities and reported the incident.

Dan said he had provided a statement at the time, but it stalled any beyond because he was “in poor health at that juncture”.

His grandparents and other family members had no idea he was a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he noted.

“Society was distinct in those days,” he reflected.

Presently, the survivor serves as a project manager for the civil service, but he had earlier been employed in a detention center, where he said he would often suppress emotions when detainees discussed their own abuse.

He further stated he was physically confronted on the job, which also led to traumatic recollections.

“Later, while serving on the jury. Memories returning to the rape once more. It was a unceasing pattern that needed to stop,” he said.

The female witnesses who helped achieve justice in the 2018 court case in which he was a jury member were “empowering”, as stated by Dan.

“It was incredibly moving to see them going up and sharing their accounts and addressing the difficult questions being thrown their way,” he commented.

“I held a position at Stansted Airport as an border agent at that time, and I had to take three weeks off due to illness.

“That was when I once more notified [the attack] to the law enforcement and I asked them to take it forward for me, which they said they could do,” he continued.

Two detectives from the authorities were allocated to Dan’s case in the year 2018, and it advanced to a formal accusation and court case at Norwich Crown Court in November 2023.

Through his court submission, Dan described how he had been diagnosed with complex post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) linked to the rape.

“I endured, and continue to have, recurring contemplations of ending my life,” he stated.

A quarter of women and nearly six percent of men have been affected by assault, or attempted violation, as per the national crime survey.

An investigation found that forty-four percent of 180 people who were exposed to disturbing content in trials reported signs resembling PTSD.

“Historic incidents, mental health difficulties and acute anxiety during a trial can worsen emotional and stress reactions,” researchers noted.

During that year, The survivor’s parent spoke to the assailant when he visited her son in the hospital after Dan had informed her what had transpired.

“I felt furious like a fire burning inside me. I was so angry,” she recalled.

The perpetrator departed and it was the ultimate instance she saw him.

In conversation with her son, she remarked: “I experienced great pride of you for persisting with what you believed in and pursuing it to the end. It was rightful vindication. You’d put in tremendous effort.

“Mentally it had deeply affected on you and we could observe how you faced challenges.”

He mentioned his existing position as an fire service volunteer for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service had contributed to the recovery journey.

“Serving the local residents has offered me something to focus on and live for,” he said.

The survivor noted he now took pleasure in his canine companions, mountain bikes and journeys.

Since May he has started to make digital content about his story and posts them on digital networks, where he now has a following of 12,000 on TikTok.

“It has supported a numerous others. The amount of personal notes I’ve had to say it has aided people is significant,” he stated. “{I’ve got to do
