United Nations Lifts Sanctions on Syria's Leader Prior to White House Visit
The UN Security Council voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.
Sharaa was named interim leader after leading a revolutionary movement that ousted the former president in December 2024, concluding over a decade of internal conflict.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.
Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Muslim faction the HTS movement, once connected to the extremist organization. The US removed HTS from a list of foreign terror groups in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the penalties, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and to friendly nations for backing of Syria and its people."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday comes after President Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
Both presidents held discussions for the first time this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the region.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".
His Islamist group HTS operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit will not be his initial visit to the United States this year. This past fall, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to address the global assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.
In his speech, he said Syria was "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
